Site Selection and Incentives Help 9 to 5 Seating Return Jobs to U.S. (Union City, TN)

Transfer of production from China utilizes idle capacity

  • Establishes a $39.5 million manufacturing investment in a severely underutilized industrial park to produce office seating
  • Creates 510 new jobs with the commitment of new products
  • Starts production in early 2014 at a warehouse vacant since 2006 with a 200,000 SF planned expansion
  • Includes city and state incentives of $32 million
  • Reverses a trend of plant closings and job losses

Family-owned 9-to-5 Seating, based in Hawthorne, California, is leaving Zhongsang, China, for Union City, Tennessee, following an intensive 20-state site selection process. The HWH Group conducted the search and also facilitated a $22 million New Markets Tax Credit financing package, which closed in December,2014.  9-to-5 Seating anticipates reducing marketing and distribution complexity as well as its transportation costs, and is slated to introduce a new retail product line called Made in America Seating.  This development helps Union City turn the corner after a 43-year old Goodyear tire plant closed in July 2011, and other job losses followed.  Now local officials are optimistic that the new jobs will help bolster the economies of the northwest Tennessee and western Kentucky counties where most of the workers live, and reignite employment growth.
